During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Figure
The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Defying suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”
Steering by Socialist Principles

- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.
The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
