The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
