European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
